The Academy Awards celebrate the best and brightest talents in Hollywood, from on-screen stars to costume creators to musical geniuses.
However when it comes fashion, the red carpet not only plays host to some of the award season's most successful moments, it also serves as a backdrop for some of the year's most awkward sartorial failures.
At this year's Oscars, it was Olympic skiing star Lindsey Vonn, 33, who led the charge as far as worst-dressed celebrities, totally missing the mark in a gothic black lace dress, which featured awkward cut-outs at the knee, as well as some bizarre tassel embellishments that did little to elevate her look.

Oh dear: Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn topped the list of worst dressed stars at this year's Academy Awards
Shiny disaster: Salma Hayek's dress was baffling to behold, with the combination of sequins, layered ruffles and military-inspired neck embellishments serving as more of an eye sore than a style statement
OTT: Actress Blanca Blanco also hit a low note with her red-and-white dress, which flashed far too much flesh thanks to its tacky neckline and thigh-high split
Take a seat: Singer Andra Day, who is performing at the ceremony, wore a bizarre dress that looked more like a pair of curtains than a black tie dress, standing out for all the wrong reasons thanks to its unflattering shape
Missing something? Singer St. Vincent appeared to be missing part of her dress, and the part that was remaining served only to prompt several unanswered questions regarding the bizarre arm shape and unique hemline
Goodness: Whoopi Goldberg hit a home run with the sunglasses, but everything from the neck down was a total mess, both in terms of the unfortunate fabric to the overbearing silhouette
She paired the gown with a large diamond choker that jarred slightly with the high neckline on her dress, which - despite its over-the-top aesthetic - did flatter her figure thanks to its clinging silhouette.
Meanwhile Salma Hayek, 51, struck out in her sequin Gucci frock, which was more of an eye sore than a style statement thanks to its over-the-top layered ruffles, military-inspired neck chains, and shimmering fabric.
She also paired the dress with a rather tacky-looking metallic clutch bag which simply added to the less-than-impressive overall look.
Some stars left little to be desired - quite literally - by baring far too much flesh, including actress Blanca Blanco, who has a reputation for baring a bit too much on the red carpet. Her red-and-white gown featured an incredibly low neckline, and a thigh-high split, with the resulting look coming across as incredibly tacky, rather than classy and high-end.
Singer St. Vincent suffered a similar fate in a bizarre black dress that looked as though it was missing the bottom half, with a strange diamond-point hemline that hung down over her crotch, making it seem like she had caught her gown in the car door and accidentally left some of it behind before hitting the carpet.

Un-suit-able: Emma Stone looked great in her custom-made ensemble, however it struck a far too casual tone for the ceremony, and made it look more like the Oscar winner was heading to brunch than to a black tie event
Low point: Although the color of Viola Davis's Michael Kors dress was sensational, the design did little to flatter her figure in terms of its fit. Meanwhile Taraji P. Henson (right) showed off far too much skin, and the dress left little to be desired, literally
Eek: Although the color of Renee Bargh's dress was incredibly flattering with her skintone, the shape of the gown, as well as its awkward lace additions, gave the overall look a rather awkward finish
Inspired by Bozo? Kelly Ripa looked like she had borrowed accessories from a clown costume in order to achieve the garish bows on the back of her otherwise-elegant dress
Oh no: Actress Haley Bennet dwarfed her petite frame with far too many feathers, while the bizarre mesh mock neck made her look like she was being strangled, while singerNatalia Lafourcade's dress also looked several sizes too big
An embellishment too far: Producer Monika Bacardi, and TV hosts Tanika Ray and Sara Haines all landed themselves on the worst-dressed list because of the over-the-top additions to their dresses, from ugly lace to ridiculous patterns
Taraji P. Henson, meanwhile, flashed a lot of flesh in her sheer figure-hugging black dress, which flattered her curvy physique, but showed off a bit too much skin.
On the other end of the spectrum, some stars' looked completely overwhelmed by their dresses, both in terms of bulky silhouettes and over-the-top patterns.
Whoopi Goldberg, for example, donned a floral strapless gown that featured a garish pattern and an enormous silhouette, that was both distracting and unflattering, as did singer Andra Day, whose flower-print gown totally dwarfed her phsyique and featured a pattern that was reminiscent of a pair of ugly curtains.
Even images of her actually lying on the red carpet to take pictures did little to distract from the sartorial disaster.
TV host Kelly Ripa looked as though she had taken some unfortunate style tips from Bozo the Clown thanks to the enormous colored bows stuck to the back of her otherwise-elegant black dress.
Last year's best actress winner Emma Stone seemed to have missed the black tie memo, arriving on the red carpet in a rather informal-looking blazer-and-pants combo which, although stylish, struck rather the wrong tone for the star-studded event.
Feeling blue? Louise Roe's gown (left) looked as though it had been painted in a child's art class, while TV host Nancy O'Dell's royal blue frock hit a slightly tacky note thanks to its too-high split and glittering embellishments
Fifty Shades of Rippon: Figure skater Adam wore what appeared to be a bondage-inpisred suit
Metallic minefield:Amatus Sami-Karim, the wife of actorMahershala Ali, wore a garish gold down that featured several bizarre additions, including scale-like layers and two parrots
Awkward: Actress Paz Vega swamped her figure in a too-big dress that had an incredibly garish pattern
Flashing the flesh:Lebanese actress Rita Hayek wore a multicolored gown that showed off far too much side boob
Shiny: Songwriter and singerTaura Stinson went too far with the shimmering fabric that did not photograph well
Disastrous: Lea Michele (left) was another viewing party star who showed off a bit too much skin in a low-cut, high-slit number, whileRashida Jones' dress swamped her figure, and featured a less-than-appealing print
A bit busy: Between the lime green hue, the many cut-outs, and the multicolored embellishments, there was a lot going on in Paris Jackson's look as she arrived to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party
Over the top: Actress Phoebe Price not only suffered a sartorial slip-up in her flamboyant feather-and-fur number, she also seemed to have something of a make-up mishap too
Viewing party disasters: Actress Clare Grant (left) and activist Monica Lewinsky both failed to impress in their ill-fitting gowns
