Barry Manilow has admittedhe is gay at the age of 73, and is married.

The fiercely private popstar, who gave us classics like ‘Mandy’ and ‘Copacabana’, has revealed he has been in a relationship with his manager husband Garry Kief for 40 years, and never revealed his true self for fear of disappointing fans.

The crooner welcomed People Magazine into hisPalm Springs home, saying: ‘I thought I would be disappointing [my fans]if they knew I was gay. So I never did anything.

‘When they found out that Garry and I were together, they were so happy. The reaction was so beautiful — strangers commenting, “Great for you!” I’m just so grateful for it.’

Manilow was previouslymarried to a woman — his high-school sweetheart Susan Deixler.

‘I was in love with Susan.I just was not ready for marriage.

‘I was out making music every night, sowing my wild oats — I was too young. I wasn’t ready to settle down,’ he told the magazine.

When he was Susan split,Manilow’s personal life took a backseat as he pursued a career in music.

After cutting his teeth on the radio jingle beat, he then produced Bette Midler’sfirst two albums.

His own career skyrocketedafter he released ‘Mandy’ in 1974,followed up with ‘Looks Like We Made It’, ‘Copacabana’ and ‘Can’t Smile Without You’.

In 1978, he met TV executive Kief.‘I knew that this was it,’ said Manilow. ‘I was one of the lucky ones. I was pretty lonely before that.’

Kief became Manilow’s manager, a role he still holds 40 years on.
