What to pick Bell Ultra or stay with Rogers

Hello I am here because I have Rogers Slow Speed oups! sorry, I mean Rogers High Speed Internet and it, well... Blows Red CHUNKS! When I complain I get great speeds but the speeds just last a few days. this is it I want out of Rogers! I checked out Bell.ca and I saw Bell Ultra and I also saw the Price but I this point i don't care. With roger the average speed is 46ks, will Ultra blow me away or will I be running back to Rogers? I have a pretty fast PC (I love online games) P4/2.4gigz/512 RAM (soon to be 1024 RAM)so the system is there I just need the internet speed to match the system. I don't know much about Ultra but I was told it depends where you live (Thornhill Ontario, just North of Toronto). Please help me by posting your thoughts and any other info i may need to take in consideration before moving from Rogers to Bell.

Thank you for your time.

Ultra will be great for you, as long as you are close enough to the Central Office (DSL is distance sensitive), and you have no line problems, internal home wiring or outside.

Call Bell and see if you qualify for Ultra, then give it a shot. You can't predict how DSL will perform until its actually installed.

Well it all depends on your line. I have Ultra, and usually get around 350KB/s download. Here's a speedtest. It's actually a little slow today, because it's usually around 2940kbps down.

Ultra is great. 350-380KB/sec download from fast sites/servers and usually 40ms ping to game servers in the US.

But as others have said, you have to be fairly close to the CO to get full speed.

North Scarboro is one of the hardest places to get DSL. The above FAQ item will tell you how to find out if you can get it.

If you go here: »/coinfo , you can enter in your area code and exchange, and it will probably tell you where your CO is located. You can also get a map with it's location. It worked for me.

It didn't work for me. Only has US options. Is there another tool somewhere that will work for Canada? Thanks.

Unfortunately CO locations in Canada are not public knowledge as they are in the US.

Here's the link. At least my CO is public.

Edit: Maybe it only works in Quebec?

Wow that's cool. I just entered in the Lat and Long of my CO and according to my GPS unit I'm 7.93KM away from the CO. My speeds are 375/75 steady though.

8km on Ultra? I don't think so dude. You could be on a Remote DSLAM. I am like 5.5km away from my CO, but only 0.5km away from a Remote DSLAM, which is where the DSL line is connected to.

This is exactly why knowing the CO location is useless now: »Bell Canada Internet FAQ »Where is my Central Office (CO) ?

Yes it must be a remote DSLAM then as I'm pretty sure my GPS calculation is within 10M or so.

I used to be on Rogers for 4 years. Before it was even Rogers and was Shaw. I finally switched to Sympatico Ultra after the limits were removed because I was fed up with my Rogers connection going down all the time and my bandwidth being so variable, it would be fast some days and slow the next. I was just fed up with them.

To make a long story short, I am much happier with Sympatico High Speed Ultra. It hasn't gone down on my once yet and it's always fast. I know Sympatico had a bad rep in the past but I think they have cleaned up their act. The only bone I have with it is the PPPoE but that doesn't bother me too much since I have a router.

Anyway in my opinion, it's worth it.
