Stars who elevated their signature styles stood out on the packed red carpet

February 6, 2023—In the last couple of years lots of rock, rap and country stars at the Grammys were dressing like movie stars—over styled to the point of perfection. There was no edge or sense of surprise which is what we want from musicians. (We want it from movie stars too by the way, but it’s pretty rare.)
Well, this year things seemed to be back to the business of shock and awe. The best looks among them were by pop stars and adjacent figures that took their personal sense of style up a few notches for the event. Lizzo in a divinely exaggerated dress and diamonds. JLo in layers of diamond necklaces. Mary J. Blige in giant gold and diamond hoops.

Taylor Swift wore a Midnight Blue Roberto Cavalli crop top and long skirt, a hat tip to her hit “Midnight Rain,” with ginormous Lorraine Schwartz Kite Shape Earrings
The jewels are set with diamonds, natural purple sapphires and Paraíba tourmalines.
Cardi B paired an architectural peek-a-boo Gaurav Guptagown with Messika diamond earrings.
The way she posed in the ensemble on the red carpet at once felt like a throwback to midcentury glamour and at the same time a totally contemporary look.
Beyoncé has attended the Grammys almost every year over the last decade to become the biggest winner of the award in history. At almost every single Grammys she has worn Lorraine Schwartz diamond jewelry and this year was no exception.
The superstar sported a Gucci dress and Lorraine Schwartz pendant earrings with six diamonds totaling over 70-carats when she won the trophy that put her over the top in terms of wins.
Jennifer Lopez layered a couple of Bulgari High Jewelry Serpenti necklaces with her Gucci gown.
Long strands of crystals on the dress echoed the movement in the jewels.
Adele switched things up from her signature black gown to a red gown but she stuck with diamond jewelry which is also part of her trademark glamour.
The dress was custom-made by Louis Vuitton and the diamonds came from Tiffany.
Lizzo looked extraordinary in a hooded Dolce & Gabbana coat with a flower motif and diamond rings.
I have as yet to receive a confirmation on the jewels she wore, but I suspect since the look was so customized from the Italian design house, the jewels might be from its High Jewelry collection.
Pharrell wears the Mughal inspired diamond sunglasses he collaborated on with Tiffany all the time so it was no surprise to see him wearing the bejeweled accessories at the Grammys. He clearly loves them.
Kendrick Lamar is another rapper in the Tiffany stable. The jeweler made the Pulitzer Prize winner a diamond and titanium crown of thorns that he has worn perpetually in spite of the kerfuffle it caused.
But for the Grammys Kendrick tossed several Tiffany brooches on his LA baseball cap. The jewels included Paloma Picasso’s scribble brooch and “Gold” pin as well as a 1970s cross design set with diamonds, emeralds and sapphires from the Tiffany archives. Kendrick also sported Tiffany diamond and platinum Soleste studs.
Olivia Rodrigo looked amazing in an Elsa Peretti for Tiffany Bean Pendant and a black dress.
Mary J. Blige made a statement in giant gold and diamond hoops and dress with crystal studded dress cutouts at the hips by The Blonds.
Madonna’s daughter Lourdes Leon was giving all kinds of Madonna in the 90s vibes in a Loree Rodkin diamond cross and crystal embellished AREA dress.
Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra necklace is not exactly a new design. It’s over 50-years old, but Saint Jhn made it look fresh as can be the way he wore it at the Grammys with another necklace, black blazer and no shirt not to mention a great updo. Oh and the jewel belongs to the rapper. I checked his Instagram and he has worn it previously.
And he wasn’t the only man at the Grammys to wear an Alhambra. A gentleman who worked on Beyoncé’s Renaissance album and appeared on the stage wore two Alhambra necklaces.
Finally, there was LL Cool J who introduced the rousing 50 years of hip hop performance. The rapper sported his signature look from years ago: chains and a Kangol hat.
It was followed up by performers who also went old school with their jewelry. All of it was like Vikki Tobak’s landmark publication Ice Cold come to life.
