Prepare to be moved: Calling all Millennials, the Broadway-bound "& Juliet" show, is only here for a limited time (2024)

This Olivier Award-winning (and rightfully so), original musical “& Juliet” is set to have its Broadway premiere this fall, but for now it’s on right here in Toronto, for a pre-broadway engagement at the Princess of Wales Theatre. Created by none other than the Emmy award-winning writer behind Schitt’s Creek, this hilarious, yet inspiring and might I say tear jerking new musical, flips the script on one of the greatest, most traditional love stories ever told. With music by the legendary five-time Grammy Award-winning songwriter/producer Max Martin, directed by Luke Sheppard and with choreo’ by Emmy Award-winning Jennifer Weber…if that doesn’t tell you to run to the box office for tickets, I don’t know what does.

Featuring nearly all of the best of the mid-90s to modern day hits (from the last 3 decades) that we most likely all know and love; so creatively interweaved with the storytelling to help accentuate it, and immerse the audience. With a powerhouse rendition of “That’s the Way It Is,” channelling the iconic diva, that is Céline Dion, who made that song famous. As well as renditions of a number of other hits like Britney Spears’ “Baby One More Time” and Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life.” In what I would say & Juliet offers millennials and others alike, an incredible flashback to their upbringing where these songs got us through days of happiness, heartbreak and challenges, while also “telling a multi-generational story of self-discovery, empowerment and love,” that really resonates like no other. It’s brilliantly done.

& Julie is really worth watching, not once, but as many times as you possibly can…

If you can get your hands on tickets… Clearly, I’m enthralled by the show, and quite honestly cannot wait to watch & Juliet again. You can find me scouring the ticket sites, scalpers you name it (my DMs are open), to get another one if not two sets of tickets to watch it over again and again.

Spoiler alert, well not really, but I sometimes just can’t hold back…

A modern twist on a classic love story, and just when you think it’s gotten good, & Juliet just keeps getting better. From heart break, to parental pressures, rebellious wandering across the world for love, exploration of new territory, experiences, self love and sexuality…that is bound to strike a chord with just about anyone, in some way shape or form — if not all–and they do it with high energy and confetti galore.

As both a millennial, queer, BIPOC individual (second-generation Canadian immigrant), I resonated with the storyline on many levels. I laughed, cried, sang my heart out, tapped along to the music, and you bet I jumped to my feet for a standing ovation at any chance I could get (spoiler: I wasn’t the only one who did, everyone I could see around me was too–and nearly all of the room was on their feet by the end). There hasn’t been many shows I’ve watched (including broadway ones too) that I could say have moved me the way & Juliet has. Grab your girls, guys, loved ones and/or anyone else alike and make a night of it.

But I won’t give too much away, you must go watch and experience it for yourself…

Editor's Note: Since publishing, Mirvish Productions later eliminated their lottery tickets, saying that it was due to "too many steps." The Rush tickets still remain available, but at the increased price of $59, which is subject to change. So get 'em while you still can.

  • The Story

    5/5 Amazing

Absolutely love the storyline, it's a fresh perspective on an old classic that quite frankly hits home because let's be honest, a lot of what is represented here is a truthful reality (unlike the original). It resonates on so many levels! The immigrant story, the queer story, the heart break, the betrayal, the self-exploration, and so much more.

  • The Music

    5.0 rating

    5/5 Amazing

Hit after hit after hit, interweaved so creatively to tell a thought provoking (tear jerking) story by using songs that for many of us, carried us through so many good times, bad times, hardships, challenges and more.

  • The Casting

    4.5 rating

    4.5/5 Very good

Everyone was casted so perfectly. From Juliet to Romeo, Shakespeare and May, but if I was to make any suggestions, it would be that François and his father be BIPOC immigrants, other than that, it was perfect.

  • The Performance

    5.0 rating

    5/5 Amazing

From the acting to the vocals to the dancing, and everything in-between, was all outstanding. The dancers were in sync, the characters felt so REAL... and the energy was infectious.

  • The Production Value

    5/5 Amazing

Loved every minute of it. Lighting was superb, the staging and production kept you engaged, following the action and so well put together--and with confetti galore.
