Advanced Clinical Training in Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine
Our three-year ACGME-accredited fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine prepares trainees to provide exceptional care for patients with a range of conditions and disease processes. At our three main training sites, UCI Medical Center, part of UCI Health, the VA Long Beach Healthcare System and Long Beach Medical Center, fellows are exposed to racially and socioeconomically diverse patient populations with a breadth of acute and chronic respiratory and critical care illnesses. We accept three or four fellows per class year.

2024-2026 Critical Care Fellow
We are seeking a Critical Care Fellow with a background in Emergency Medicine for a 2-year fellowship program running from 2024 to 2026.

A core strength of our program is its emphasis on work-life balance despite our robust curriculum and busy rotation schedules.
Supportive of trainees, and in turn the trainees support one another.
Essential to our team, fellows are encouraged to provide input and feedback in both structured and informal settings regarding curriculum, scheduling of rotations and anything else that might affect their training.
As faculty, we are gratified by the immediate impact we have on future clinicians. It is a joy to watch our trainees turn into confident, well-balanced and outstanding clinicians.
While the fellowship is primarily a clinical program, fellows are encouraged to become involved in clinical research under the mentorship of our faculty, who have a broad range of clinical research projects underway. Fellows routinely present at meetings and publish in prestigious journals.

Our Core
Clinical Training includes in-depth exposure to the following fields.
Advanced Lung Diseases
Including pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung disease and pulmonary embolism
Critical Care Medicine
Fellows in our program undergo extensive clinical exposure to critical care medicine, including medical, neuro-ICU, trauma-ICU and surgical intensive care units. This hands-on experience allows fellows to manage a broad spectrum of critically ill patients.
Pleural Diseases
Our fellows are deeply immersed in a diverse range of pleural diseases, gaining hands-on experience in the diagnosis, management and treatment of conditions such as complex pleural effusions, pneumothorax and malignant pleural effusions.
Thoracic Oncology
Encompassing early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and interventional curative and palliative care, as well as end-of-life issues
Interventional Pulmonary
Including EBUS (endobronchial ultrasound), ENB (electromagnetic navigational bronchoscopy), percutaneous tracheostomy and advanced pleural procedures
Sleep Medicine
Fellows receive training in the management of complex sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnea, obesity hypoventilation syndrome and central sleep apnea.
Pulmonary Physiology
Including cardiopulmonary exercise testing
The Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine fellowship is to prepare interested trainees for a career in academic medicine. Research activities assist fellows in developing skills necessary for patient care, including use of evidence-based medicine, knowledge about hypothesis-driven research methodologies, integration of new technology, clinical- and research-derived information into patient care plans, as well as outcomes analysis.
Multiple opportunities exist for fellows to participate in clinical trials, retrospective and prospective clinical investigations, case reports and research-education activities.
All fellows are encouraged to present their data at local, national or international forums and to serve as educators through lectures and conferences of medical students and ancillary healthcare providers. Explore examples of active research areas.
Pulmonary Diseases Research
The Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship participates in the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) and the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applicants must have completed at least three years of internal medicine training (including an internship) at a hospital recognized by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).
Applicants may register for NRMP online. For more information on the fellowship application process, contact the ERAS Fellowship Documents Office online or at 215-966-3940.
Please submit the following supporting documents to ERAS:
- Dean's letter, transcripts and Doctor of Medicine certificate (diploma) from medical school (the original certificate must be brought to the interview)
- Three letters of reference (one from the residency program director)
- USMLE step 1 and 2 scores are required; step 3 must be scheduled
- CV and a personal statement
International medical school graduates must provide a copy of their visa. Those with permanent residency status or a J-1 visa must provide a current certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates.
