United's all-time record goal scorer returned to Old Trafford in style, scoring a phenomenal free-kick for the game's opener.

Speaking post-match, Rooney reacted to his performance, he said: "Yeah, I’m alright with the ball at my feet. It’s just the running part!

"I was tempted to shoot more but wanted to keep the ball as well."

Scholes says 'Is this live?' during post-match interview

MUTV presenter Zarah Connollyapologised live on air after legendary Man Utd midfielder Paul Scholes accidentally swore during his post-match interview.

During the match, Scholes was forced to quickly move out of the way of Nicky Butt's high ball.

Reacting to the pass after the game, he said: "I'm going to get t*****d here, I can see! Sorry for swearing. Is it live?"

Connolly laughed at Scholes' immediate error before saying: "Apologies for that. I knew that that target would have been Nicky Butt right there."

TheMiddlesbroughboss and Red Devils hero, 43, returned to the Theatre of Dreams for aMan UtdLegends match against a squad of former Celtic stars on Saturday afternoon.

Carrick, 43, was named captain for the afternoon in a star-studded side that also includedWayne Rooneyand Dimitar Berbatov.

And within two minutes of kick-off, fans at home were quick to compare current flopCasemirowith Carrick.

One fan wrote on X: "Michael Carrick could get on the pitch for us and still put in a better performance than Casemiro."

Rooney reveals club he would have loved to have played for

Wayne Rooney has revealed that he had hoped to play for Celtic during his playing career.

The retired footballer spent the majority of his career atManchester Unitedbefore hanging up his boots in 2021.

Rooney, 38, scored a record 253 goals for the Red Devils in his 559 games in all competitions.

He joined the club in 2004 fromEvertonand then rejoined the Toffees in 2017.

Rooney then had stints with DC United andDerby Countybefore calling it a day.

However, headmitted that he would have liked to wear the famous green and white hoops ofCelticbefore thelegends match againstMan United.

He toldCeltic's club media: "Celtic has always been a team I have followed and wanted to win.

"Unfortunately, I did not get the opportunity to play for Celtic. I would have liked too.

Why Roy Keane didn't feature in the charity match

Keane has revealed the "embarrassing" reason why he will not play in games like the Manchester United Legends match against Celtic.

The Old Trafford icon retired from playing in 2006 after one season withCeltic.

The Irishman, 53, appears to be in good shape, having not put on much weight since his playing days.

However,Keanehas admitted that he is nowhere close to being fit enough to feature intestimonial matches.

The former midfielder has even suggested that his "embarrassing" fitness levels would stop him from being able to run.

He told Off The Ball: "I'm not fit. I'm far from fit. My fitness levels are actually very, very embarrassing.

"Just because I've not put on loads of weight doesn't mean to say I'm fit. I wouldn't really be able to do any running.

"Put it this way, I've been invited a number of times over the last few years to play legends games or whatever you want to call it.

"I'd find it really difficult because I wouldn't be able to get around.

"Too many injury problems.

"I try to have a decent diet and I'm obviously weary about putting on too much weight.

"But I certainly wouldn't be fit enough to go on any sort of run. I do a small bit of cycling but even that - I'm not exactly Sean Kelly."

Man Utd fans have demanded the club replace the current squad with legends of old.

The calls to drop the flops came after watching aRed Devils legends team take on Celtic at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooneycurled in a wonderful free-kick to give the hosts the lead.

His strike partner,Dimitar Berbatov, also looked sharp as he linked up well with Rooney.

WhileMichael Carrickalso showed he still had plenty in the locker with a mazy run through theCelticdefence.

Some viewers even claimed that the retired English midfielderwould start over Casemiro.

Fans could not help but think of Man United's previous success with these players.

History of the Legends matches

The first, back in 2013, saw the now 15-times European champions Real Madrid win 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo and Fabio Cannavaro all played that day.

In 2015, United ran out 4-2 winners against Bayern Munich thanks to strikes from Louis Saha, Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole and Jesper Blomqvist.

The Red Legends were managed by Alex Ferguson in 2019.

The team powered to a 5-0 triumph, with Ole Gunner Solskjaer and David Beckham joined on the scoresheet by Yorke, Saha and Nicky Butt.
