Making a First Aid Kit
I first got the idea to make a first aid kit with my kids during a paid campaign with an iconic comic strip company. I set up the activity and didn’t really know what to expect from my kids. Well wasn’t I pleasantly surprised to see how much they enjoyed this activity and how much they got into it. We talked about taking care of each other and how a first aid kit was a great way to help out a friend or loved one who has been hurt.
This unassuming little activity took up almost an hour of our day. An hour in the late spring where they coloured, decorated and talk amongst themselves. After we put the entire kit together they even went and roll played getting hurt and then helping that person out by pretending to clean and dress their wound. It was adorable!

DIY First Aid Kit
According to the Canadian Red Cross these are the items that should be included in a first air kit. We of course didn’t include all of these items but I have included everything here for your reference:
- Emergency telephone numbers for EMS/9-1-1, your local poison control centre, and your personal doctors
- Home and office phone numbers for family members, friends, or neighbours who can help
- Sterile gauze pads (dressings) in small and large squares to place over wounds
- Adhesive tape
- Roller and triangular bandages to hold dressings in place or to make an arm sling
- Adhesive bandages in assorted sizes
- Scissors
- Tweezers
- Safety pins
- Instant ice packs
- Disposable non-latex gloves, such as surgical or examination gloves
- Flashlight, with extra batteries in a separate bag
- Antiseptic wipes or soap
- Pencil and pad
- Emergency blanket
- Eye patches
- Thermometer
- Barrier devices, such as a pocket mask or face shield
- Coins for pay phone
In our first aid kit we included the following items:
- Sterile gauze pads (dressings) in small and large squares to place over wounds
- Adhesive tape
- Adhesive bandages in assorted sizes
- Tweezers
- Disposable non-latex gloves, such as surgical or examination gloves
- Antiseptic wipes or soap
- Mask
- Hand santizer
- Antihistamine (anti-allergy) pills – for minor allergic reactions
- Hydrocortisone (anti-itch) cream
How to Make a First Aid Kit
- Grab a waterproof pouch.
- I had my 6 year old write FIRST AID KIT on the front in permanent marker and then let my twins decorate it with stickers and markers.
- Before putting in all the items, I check the expiration date for any items that weren’t new to make sure they would last until at least the entire summer. I removed any new items from their boxes.
- I then let everyone decorate the outside out unopened bandages. They loved this part! I let them use stickers, paint sticks dot marker gem stickers and markers. They made ones for each other, mom and dad.
- Next, I handed my 6 year a piece of card stock, slightly bigger than a phone and asked her to write out some important information on it such as:
- My name and daddy’s name and phone number and our home address parent or guardian’s phone number(s), and home and/or work address.
- The name, address and telephone number of their pediatrician.
- Number for local emergencies including fire department, hospitals and police stations
- 911
- If your child has any allergies or other medication it is a good idea to include that on the the sheet as well.
Once they finished decorating, I had them place everything into the bag, as they did we named all the items and talk about when we it for. Thankfully everything fit in the bag!
You can always purchase a ready made first aid kit and add the extra items as well as decorate it.

Age Suitability
This activity is good for kids 3 years and up. My kids are 3, 3, and 6 year old.
