Individual Seven-Layer Dips are individually portioned Mexican appetizer dips perfect for parties, BBQs, potlucks, and get togethers. These are definitely a memorable appetizer that will have people raving. Unlike the traditional 7-layer bean dip, there’s no double dipping here!

Individual Seven-Layer Dips

We keep it pretty minimal when it comes to toys for our kids on Christmas but yet somehow I feel like there’s STUFF everywhere! Anyone else feel this way?

We’re swimming in Legos over here and just when I think I’ve cleaned up the last of them, I’ll step on one or one of my boys will drop their ships and Lego pieces go flying everywhere.

I think my husband spent 6 straight hours on Christmas helping them build Legos.

Seven layer dip is one of my favorites. But after a few people have dipped (hopefully not double-dipped), it starts to look like mush.

All the pretty layers turn into an unidentifiable, unappetizing pile.

My sister told me about the idea of individual seven layer dips as a party idea.

The great thing about seven layer dip is that you can adjust it to your personal tastes.

Now, you could make these in glass tumblers too, but we are pretty casual over here so plastic tumblers are the way we roll.

These would be great for watching a football game or for a New Year’s party.Individual Seven-Layer Dips (+VIDEO) - The Girl Who Ate Everything (3)

Garnish with one tortilla chip. Store in the refrigerator until serving and serve with chips. Makes around 8 individual dips.

Servings: 8 cups

Ingredients

  • 1 (16 ounce) can refried beans
  • 1 (1 ounce) package taco seasoning
  • 1 cup guacamole or make homemade guacamole
  • 1 (8 ounce) container sour cream
  • 1 cup chunky salsa or pico de gallo; or make homemade pico de gallo
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or Mexican blend cheese
  • 2 Roma tomatoes, , diced
  • 1/2 bunch of green onions, , sliced
  • 1 (2.25 ounce) can sliced olives, drained
  • 8 (9 ounce) plastic tumblers
  • tortilla chips

Instructions

  • In a small bowl mix taco seasoning with refried beans. Some people prefer to mix their taco seasoning with the sour cream layer but I wanted a bright white layer so I did it with the beans.

Here's how the layers are assembled:

  • Layer 1: beans and taco seasoning; Layer 2: sour cream; Layer 3: guacamole; Layer 4: salsa or pico de gallo; Layer 5: cheese; Layer 6: tomatoes; Layer 7: green onions and olives

  • In each plastic glass, layer about 2 Tablespoons of the beans, followed by 2 Tablespoons of sour cream, 2 Tablespoons of guacamole, 2 Tablespoons of salsa or pico de gallo, and 2 Tablespoons of cheese. Make sure you drain your salsa or pico to get the excess liquid out before you pour it on. Then top with about 1-2 teaspoons of tomatoes, olives, and green onion (If making ahead of time, wait to add these toppings until shortly before serving).

  • Garnish with one tortilla chip. Store in the refrigerator until serving and serve with chips. Makes around 8 individual dips.

Notes

It makes it easier to place the wet ingredients like sour cream and guacamole in a Ziploc bag and snip of the corner for easy piping.

Note: All measurements are approximate. Depending on whether you want thicker or thinner layers you will need more or less.

Serving: 1grams

This is a great idea! My kids and grandkids would like the idea of their own cup. What size plastic tumbler did you use for these?

    Thanks for sharing.

    • Christy Denney Reply

I use the 9 ounce tumblers.

  2. Jackie Reply

Made for fund raiser dance party – very well received and enjoyed by all. Recipe was easy to follow and it did make 8 so I had to multiply for larger group and they still turned out wonderful

    • Christy Denney Reply

Wow that’s a lot of work but you made it happen!

  3. Jackie Reply

I want to make these for my book club. I like the idea of keeping the sour cream white but.. Im not a fan of refried beans- Im wondering how it would be if I used black beans and mixed them with the taco seasoning ? any suggestions?? Thanks!

    • Christy Denney Reply

      That would be fine!

  4. Pam Holley Reply

I had some of the 7 layer salad today and oh my.

    • Christy Denney Reply

      So happy to hear that!

  5. Lena Reply

Can these be made the day ahead, without the guacamole changing color?

    • Christy Denney Reply

As long as you trap it in between layers with no air hitting it, it will stay green

  6. Houston Hughes Reply

Maybe I’m blind but I couldn’t find the amount of servings. I was able to make 9 servings following the recipe with the 9 FL OZ cups I had. They tast great!

    • Christy Denney Reply

The servings is listed on the top left of the recipe card. This serves 9. You were right.

  7. brenda Reply

What size cups do you use? I want to get cups that will be full for the best presentation, but I also don’t want to use up too many ingredients to fill an oversized cup.

    • Christy Denney Reply

The recipe lists 9 ounce tumblers in the ingredients as the optimal size.

What a great idea! But then again you always have something new up your sleeve. I have a secret to share with you. My kids and grandkids are all grown and I miss the legos. You will someday too. Thanks for the great idea.

These are always a favorite at the beach, picnics, potlucks, and cookouts! My variations are that I use whole black beans instead of refried, and then I use avacado (with lemon added-to prevent browning) instead of guacamole. Then with the salsa already in it – I skip the diced tomato (for lack of cup space, also, because of the cups I have available in my area)
Thank you for the great ideas!

    • Christy Denney Reply

      Great tips Bonny! Thank you.

This dip becomes a whole lot healthier in the fat department, if one omits the full fat sour cream and adds a low fat or even a non-fat sour cream and leaves off the cheese shreds or uses a low fat or fat free cheese or even a non-dairy cheese. You can also bake your own oil free tortilla chips or look for oil free crackers to use with the dip. If anyone l lives near a Whole Foods, they have a Woven Wheat cracker that is baked. It is 100% whole wheat with only a little salt added and there is 0 saturated fat in this cracker. I am always looking for a way to cut saturated fats out of my diet wherever I can.

    • Christy Denney Reply

Thanks for all of the helpful tips Diane.

This idea is awesome! I will cover with cling wrap , stack in cooler to transport. I also added a hamburger meat (taco meat) layer.

Made this recipe and it was a hit. Very tasty and people were able to eat it without making a mess.

  16. RBS Reply

What do you think about making them the night before a luncheon the following day? Or would the ingredients all sorta blend? Just asking for a friend. ;))

    • Christy Denney Reply

They wouldn’t blend. As long as the guac doesn’t have contact with the air it and you sandwich it between layers it should be fine.

I made these for tailgate party and it was a big hit. I used slightly smaller cups 5oz which I think I was a good serving. It was a lot of work, but it paid off. Thank you!!

    • Christy Denney Reply

      Glad you liked them!

    • Christy Denney Reply

      Glad to hear that!

  20. Heidi Reply

How far in advance could these be made?

    • Christy Denney Reply

Guac tends to brown so unless you layer in between other layers, same day is best.

  21. Maggie Reply

For 7-layer taco dips, I suggest you let your readers know that the easiest way to handle all that messy stuff (refried beans, sour cream, etc.) is to put each item in a quart bag, seal the bag, snip the corner off the bag and squeeze product into each cup.

    • Reny Reply

Wish I had read that before I made them!! Thanks for the tip!!

  22. Rebecca Smith Reply

I was thinking that I could replace refried beans with 4 Bean mix, would that work?

    • Christy Denney Reply

      Im not sure!

  23. Cathy Reply

If I use A 5 ounce cup, would that be way too small?

    • Christy Denney Reply

I actually think they would be great!!

      • Cathy Reply

        Thank you!!

    • Marsha Liss Reply

      Hi Cathy & Christy,
I was just pondering the 5 oz cup too!
      – I wanted the cup lower so it would be easier to dip the chips in…
      How did yours turn out?
      Thank-you!
      Marsha

  24. Jill Reply

I’m making 24 of these for a larger gathering and will be putting each filling (wet ones) in gallon ziploc bags, then cutting off a small edge of the corner. You then make a circle into the cup, by squeezing the baggie with the cut corner. Thanks for this great idea! Adding brown lunch bags, with the tops rolled down, for individual chip bags to go with each dip cup.

    • Jill Reply

Also, swap the sour cream and guacamole layers. Sour cream sits fine on top of beans and salsa sits fine on top of guac but salsa on top of sour cream melded and made pink tones. I made these last minute, to be fresh, and they are fine (no brown guac) 3 days later in fridge. I will make the day before next time.

      • Christy Denney Reply

Good to know! My guac browned though.

    • Christy Denney Reply

      Love that idea!

Made these for a Super Bowl party. They are colorful and look great on the table. I also chose to start with the sour cream on the bottom. So that the layers look even, I piped the sour cream and refried beans into the cups. Otherwise, the sour cream splattered up the cup and the refried beans wouldn’t spread over the sour cream. The only comment I from my guests was that they were difficult to eat with tortilla chips…you can’t get to the bottom – the chips break. I would suggest serving with Fritoes or make the layers a little thinner.

    • Christy Denney Reply

      Thanks for your feedback!

Has anyone made these the night before? Does the guacamole stay green the next day?

    • Christy Denney Reply

I’ve made them the night before and as long as you have the layers well sealed with no air, they will stay green.

  33. Munira Gangat Reply

    Hi
Looks awesome. Can the dip be inverted onto a serving plate?

    • Christy Denney Reply

I think it would actually stick but I’ve never tried it.

  34. Kelly Reply

I pinned this recipe a long time ago and finally tried it tonight. What a great idea for individual serving cups!
I made the pico de gallo and guacamole recipes you had on here also for this. SO GOOD! I got rave reviews from everyone except my husband, lol! He said there was way too much onion in the pico. I laughed and told him that most people actually LIKE onion, unlike himself. I asked a couple of people if they felt if it had too much onion and they all said no, that it was perfect the way it was. I thought so too. The idea for individual cups makes the prep work a lot more time consuming, but it is great for a party so I felt like it was worth the extra time. No one likes a double-dipper!
I followed the recipes as written for the 7-layer dip, guacamole and pico, except I only used about 3/4 of the jalapeño in the guac because there was going to be a lot of kids there. This is now my go-to recipe for a 7-layer dip, guacamole and pico de gallo. Thanks for sharing!

    • Christy Denney Reply

Thank you so much! It is a lot of work but like you said great for parties!

Silly question on your Individual Seven Layer Dips: when mixing the taco seasoning with the refried beans, is it just the dry taco seasoning, or are you mixing it with water?

I’m late to the party, but I found this on Wednesday and made it on Thursday. Used a tbsp. cookie scoop to add 2 tbsp. of each of the layers, and smoothed the edges to the side of the cups with a teaspoon. Went quickly, looked great. Sort of an assembly line approach. Big hit at the potluck I took them to – thanks for a great idea! Now maybe I could make individual trifles this way, hmmmm… : )
