Sarah McLachlan Bio, Life, and Career:

Sarah McLachlan was born on January 28th, 1968 in the city of Halifax, which is located in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada. She was entrusted to the care of the McLachlan family, who ultimately adopted her through the proper legal channels. When she was younger, she was an active member of the Girl Guides of Canada and took part in many guiding activities. She began playing instruments at the age of very young, beginning with the ukulele when she was only four years old. She attended the Maritime Conservatory of Music, where she was instructed in classical guitar, classical piano, and voice in accordance with the guidelines established by The Royal Conservatory of Music.

At the age of 17, while she was still a student at Queen Elizabeth High School in Halifax, she fronted a rock band named The October Game. However, the band did not last very long. Out of the Fog and Out of the Fog Too are two releases by the independent record label Flamingo Records. Both of these releases feature one of the band’s songs titled “Grind,” which is listed as a group composition. It has not yet been made available in any other regions.

Mark Jowett, the frontman for Moev, approached McLachlan after The October Game’s performance at Dalhousie University, where they were opening for Moev, and offered him a recording contract with the indie record label Nettwerk, which is situated in Vancouver. Prior to relocating to Vancouver and beginning a new life as a recording artist, McLachlan’s parents required that she graduate high school and spend one-year pursuing studies at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

They did this so that she might start a new life as an artist. After two years of trying, she was ultimately signed to Nettwerk before she had ever composed a single song. At the age of 19, a common acquaintance set them up for a meeting with each other’s birth mothers. McLachlan did not go looking for her and had mixed feelings about the prospect of getting to know her.

In 1994, McLachlan was taken to court by Uwe Vandrei, an infatuated admirer from Ottawa who claimed that the song “Possession” was inspired by his letters to McLachlan. Vandrei filed the lawsuit against McLachlan. The fact that Vandrei was a confessed stalker and that she acknowledged the purpose in filing the lawsuit was to be near McLachlan posed a challenge to the legal system in Canada.

The challenge was compounded by the fact that the action was filed. As a direct result of this, measures were established to ensure McLachlan’s safety in the event that she needed to be in the same location as Vandrei. Nevertheless, prior to the beginning of the trial, Vandrei was discovered dead in what appeared to be a suicide. Creating a Mystery: The Tale of Sarah McLachlan and Lilith Fair is a book written by Canadian author Judith Fitzgerald. Inside its pages, Vandrei’s obsession with Sarah McLachlan is discussed at length.

In 1997, McLachlan tied the knot with Ashwin Sood, the band’s drummer, in Jamaica. Her mother passed away in December 2001 from cancer, right around the time that she was expecting her first child. On April 6, 2002, she gave birth to a daughter named India in Vancouver while she was working on her subsequent album, titled Afterglow. She gave birth to her second daughter, Taja, on June 22, 2007, also in Vancouver. Taja was born there. In September of 2008, McLachlan made the announcement that she was divorcing Sood, and the couple divorced the following year.

McLachlan uprooted his life and moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, after earning a record deal with Nettwerk. There, in 1987, she recorded her debut album, titled Touch. The album was well acclaimed by critics and was successful commercially; it featured the song “Vox.” During this time period, she also made contributions to an album that was released by Moev, delivered vocals for “As the End Draws Near” by Manufacture, and embarked on her first nationwide concert tour as an opening act for The Grapes of Wrath.

Her album, Solace, which was released in 1991, served as her introduction to the mainstream music scene in Canada. It was successful enough to create the hit songs “The Trail of Thorns (Terms)” and “Into the Fire.” Also, Solace served as the beginning of her working relationship with Pierre Marchand. Since that time, Marchand has worked with McLachlan as a collaborator, producing a significant number of McLachlan’s albums and occasionally contributing to the songwriting process.

In Canada, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy was an instant smash when it was released in 1993. Due to her association with Nettwerk, the piano version of her song “Possession” was featured on the original soundtrack for Due South, which was released in 1996. Fumbling Towards Ecstasy became McLachlan’s international breakout album over the course of the subsequent two years, climbing to the top of the charts in a number of different nations.

After the success of Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, McLachlan released her next album, Surfacing, in 1997. The Surfacing has been her most commercially successful album to this day. This album won her two Grammy Awards in 1998: one for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (for “Building a Mystery”) and one for Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance (for “Last Dance”). It also won her four Juno Awards: one for Album of the Year for Surfacing, one for Song of the Year for “Building a Mystery,” and one for Songwriter of the Year for “Building a Mystery.”

After peaking at number one on the Canadian Albums Chart and number two on the US Billboard 200, the album has since gone on to sell over 16 million copies throughout the world and has garnered her a great deal of success on the international stage. While she was still receiving a lot of attention for the album, McLachlan started the extremely successful Lilith Fair tour. Her song “Angel,” which was prompted by the tragic overdose of Smashing Pumpkins touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin, was responsible for the meteoric rise in sales of her album.

One of the songs from Surfacing, titled “Full of Grace,” was used in the season two finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, titled “Becoming (Part II),” as well as in episode four of the first season of Dawson’s Creek titled “Discovery” and the movie Moll Flanders (1996 film). By 2015, she had racked up more than 40 million album sales throughout the globe. Surfacing is McLachlan’s best-selling album to this day, and it earned her two Grammy Awards (out of a total of four nominations) in addition to four Juno Awards. In addition to her own musical endeavors, she was the founder of the Lilith Fair tour, which primarily featured the work of female musicians.
