How I Got My Picky Eater to Try New Foods with Funbites® - (2024)

by Paula Bendfeldt-Diaz

I have a very picky eater and introducing new foods is really hard for him and for us. He has food aversions and sensory sensitivities, he doesn’t like anything soft or mushy and he doesn’t like to get dirty so he loves finger foods. We have tried everything to get him to try new things; he even goes to feeding therapy where and occupational therapist works with him every week introducing him to new foods, flavors and textures through food play.

I was thrilled when I saw funbites® on a friend’s blog. So what is funbites®? Here’s a description from their website: “Funbites® is the first state of the art kitchen tool that instantly cuts kids’ food into BITE-SIZED FUN SHAPED PIECES. funbites® is 100% MADE IN THE USA and BPA free.” They are perfect to get even the pickiest eaters to try something new and eat healthier.

Funbites® has two products the Cube It! Pack and the Luv It! Pack. The Cube it! cuts foods in small squares while the Luvi It! cuts food into a lovely heart shape. Since Valentine’s was getting closer we got the Luv It! pack. As soon as we got it I couldn’t wait to try it out and we have been experimenting with different foods since then. So far we have tried it on pancakes, cheese, jam, bread, sandwiches and fruit.

Our Funbites® Breakfast

I tried funbites® for breakfast first. I made chocolate and vanilla whole wheat pancakes which usually are not received with too much excitement (I swear my little man can smell when a food is healthy and instantly he refuses to eat it). I used the funbites® Luv It! pack and then mixed up the two colored pancake pieces making different designs, needless to say my kids couldn’t get enough of it. Ok so that was fun but my little one eats pancakes already. The next morning I decided to add some foods he doesn’t eat .

My little guy doesn’t eat fruit at all except for bananas and a bite or two of apple once in a while so I cut up some bananas, pineapple and strawberries. Then I cut up the center of the pancakes and arranged the fruit inside of the pancake. It looked so pretty and fun, my daughter devoured it and my little man tried two new foods: strawberries and pineapples! I was over the moon.

Our Funbites® Lunch

For lunch I tried combining two different kinds of cheese and some turkey ham. My little man has never eaten ham, did I mention this kid has a serious food aversion problem? Yes I was not kidding! The food looked like so much fun that he was willing to try it and again no big fuss about it.

He goes to preschool three days per week so next day it was a school day. He was so happy and excited about all the different things you can do with funbites® that he asked me to cut up his grilled cheese sandwich so he could show his friends his “heart shaped food made up of lots of triangles”.

Funbites® is really easy to use and easy to clean. The pack includes a set of plastic blades for cutting the food (totally kid safe) and a food popper that pushes out the food once it’s been cut. Watch the video to see funbites® in action. I love that it not only lets you turn food into fun shapes like a heart but that it also cuts it up into bite sized pieces which means I don’t have to cut up the kid’s food when I use it .

You can learn more about the Funbites® on their website, like them on Facebook and follow them on twitter.

Disclosure: I received aFunbites® Luv it! Pack to review but was not financially compensated in any way. All opinions expressed here are honest and my own and are based on my observations while using this product.
