Honey Nut Crock Pot Chex Mix - Sweet and Salty Chex Mix

This Honey Nut Crock Pot Chex Mix is the perfect Sweet and Salty Chex Mix to satisfy all of your snack cravings. You'll love that this version is made in a slow cooker for easy prep! But if the oven is more of your jam, I included instructions for that preparation below too.

My Healthy Chex Mix has a few healthy swaps including no butter or white sugar! I used coconut oil for the butter and reduced the amount. Second, to make it sweet without refined sugar, I used honey. Many sweet Chex mix recipes call for traditional cinnamon sugar, corn syrup, or brown sugar. Third I traded peanuts for almonds which as more heart-healthy fats! I also added some powdered peanut butter to give it that nutty flavor, without adding more unnecessary calories to it.

The final product includes the perfect combination of healthy salty Chex cereal, pretzels, and almonds. Plus sweet honey, coconut oil, and dark chocolate. You definitely get that sweet Chex mix flavor AND the sweet and salty check mix vibes. This is such a fabulous snack mix recipe for any occasion.

This Crock Pot Honey Nut & Dark Chocolate Chex Mix is unique, inspired, and oh-so delicious.

  • You don't have to heat up the oven! Or if you are cooking other things, this recipe doesn't take up your oven space.
  • It's a versatile recipe that you can make for evening snacks, football, or Super Bowl parties, or even package it up as an edible gift for the holidays.

Can you make Chex mix in a crock pot?

Yes! It's a Crock Pot Chex Mix that is great because it's easy to assemble and less likely to burn than when you make it in the oven. You can make any type of Chex mix in the slow cooker - crock pot including this Sweet and Salty Chex Mix and more of a standard Chex Mix recipe.

Ingredients:

Here's an overview of what you'll need to make this Salty and Sweet Crock Pot Chex Mix, but keep scrolling for the full recipe amounts.

  • Chex Cereal:The base for this Chex mix recipe is, of course, Chex cereal. I used half honey nut Chex cereal and half rice Chex cereal, but you can use whichever type you have on hand that you like including wheat Chex or corn Chex. Just make sure you use 6 cups in total.
  • Pretzels: Mini pretzels are perfect for adding the salty component to this Chex mix.
  • Cheerios:Cheerios are a great addition to this Chex mix and for extra honey nut flavor, I use Honey Nut Cheerios, but once again you can substitute another type you may already have in your pantry.
  • Almonds: Instead of peanuts, I like to use almonds for more heart-healthy fats.
  • Dark Chocolate Chips:The dark chocolate chips are what really add sweetness to this Honey Nut Chex Mix! You'll need to toss them in at the end so they don't melt in the crock pot.
  • Coconut Oil:Instead of cooking my Chex mix in butter and savory spices like garlic powder and onion powder, I made a sweet coating including coconut oil, honey, and peanut butter. It's what gives the Chex mix more of a sweet flavor! Use your favorite melted coconut oil for this.
  • Honey:Honey is the perfect sweetener for this Chex mix.
  • Powdered Peanut Butter:I don't use powdered peanut butter a lot, but this is a great use for it to get that peanut butter flavor without adding a ton of calories. Stir it into the honey and coconut oil mixture. You can find it in many health food stores, or buy it here.

Crock Pot Instructions:

Here's an overview of what you'll need to make the Sweet and Salty Crock Pot Chex Mix, but keep scrolling for the full recipe.

  1. Get out a large crock pot or slow cooker. Put the Chex cereal, pretzels, cheerios, and almonds inside.

  4. Cook on low for 3 hours. Stir after 1 hour, 2 hours, and 2 ½ hours. Watch carefully to keep it from burning.
  5. Put the lid on but leave a small ¼-inch crack in the lid. This allows the moisture to escape and for it to turn crispy.
  6. Once it's cooked, you pull it out to finish hardening on a sheet pan.
  7. Stir in the dark chocolate chips when it's cool enough not to melt them. You'll want it to reach about room temperature.
  8. Enjoy!

Oven Instructions:

  2. At the bottom of a large mixing bowl, whisk together the melted coconut oil, honey, and powdered peanut butter.

Variations

I love this Crock Pot Chex Mix recipe- Sweet and Salty Chex Mix as written, but here are some fun variations.

  • Mix up the Mix: This is a basic combination of cereal and pretzels, but you can add other crackers, cereal, or goodies that you'd like to the Chex mix. The only trick is to keep the proportions the same. For example, the total amount of cereal and nuts needs to stay the same.
  • Make it Savory Crock Pot Chex Mix: Use melted butter instead of coconut oil and honey and savory spices like onion powder seasoning salt, and garlic powder instead of powdered peanut butter. Substitute more savory crackers (oyster crackers, cheese it crackers, bagel chips, cheese crackers. or goldfish crackers) for the dark chocolate chips. Pour the butter mixture over the chex mix and cook in the same way.
  • Mix Up the Chocolate: I used dark chocolate chips but you can use milk chocolate, white chocolate, or even something fun like M&M candy or Reese's Pieces.
  • Mix Up the Nuts: You can use any type of nut you like including peanuts, cashews, pecans, or walnuts. Or make it nut-free by subbing out an equal amount of another cereal or small cracker.
