I think sprinkles bring out the kid in everyone. Sprinkles just make everything look so fun.

I wanted to include one bright and colorful cookie this week – like Homemade Funfetti cookies – that was festive but didn’t require any decorating.

So, if you’re making cookies for kids (or kids at heart), these guys are the way to go!

Tips for making funfetti cookies

  • You’ll want the butter to just be melted. If the butter is too hot, it can lead to greasy cookies.
  • I’ve had good luck with Betty Crocker sprinkles. I’ve used them quite a bit, and I’ve never had them bleed.
  • These cookies taste like vanilla butter cookies. They don’t taste like cake mix.

Prep Time 10 minutes minutes

Cook Time 8 minutes minutes

Total Time 18 minutes minutes

Soft vanilla butter cookies that are full of sprinkles

Equipment

  • Cookie sheets

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup sprinkles

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 F.

  • Microwave the butter for about 40 seconds. Butter should be completely melted but shouldn't be hot.

  • In a large bowl, mix butter with the sugars until well-combined.

  • Stir in vanilla and egg until incorporated.

  • Add the flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix until just combined. Dough should be soft and a little sticky but not overly sticky.

  • Gently fold in sprinkles

  • Scoop out 1.5 tablespoons of dough (medium cookie scoop) and place on baking sheet.

  • Bake for 7-10 minutes, or until cookies are set. They will be puffy and still look a little underbaked in the middle.

ok woooooow!!! I don’t like sprinkle/sugar cookies that much but this had been requested by my kids and my brother lol THEY WERE SOOO EASY AND QUICK AND THE FINAL RESULT WAS AWWWESOME!!! perfectly round and thick chewy cookies. I really can’t explain how awesome they were. just try them (and use a scale to measure the sugar and flour!)

Hi your recipe looks nice and I would definitely love to try it, however is there a way to make the cookies a bit hard and not to soft?

    Reply

    • Kate says

Hi! The cookies are meant to be soft and chewy, so it may work out better to find a recipe with ingredients geared toward a crispier cookie. You could try increasing the baking time by a couple minutes to see whether that gives you crispier cookies, but I wouldn’t want you to end up with overdone cookies.

I have only salted butter, should I not add the salt because of that?

    Reply

    • Kate says

I use salted butter when I make the cookies and add the listed amount of salt. It’s really going to depend on your tastes. The amount of salt would be 1/4 teaspoon of (regular table) salt, which is about 2 pinches. So, it’s a pretty minimal amount of salt.

This is my favorite recipe. I’m just wondering can these cookies be frozen prior to baking?

    Reply

    • Kate says

Thank you! Yes, you can freeze scoops of the dough on a baking sheet until frozen. Then place the frozen scoops in a resealable freezer bag.

These are super yummy! 1 tablespoon of vanilla was too strong for my taste. I would cut back to 1 teaspoon!

Always love funfetti cookies. Have a problem with the sprinkles bleeding, am hoping the refrigerated dough helps, and not overriding.

    • Kate says

I had to fold them in really gently to avoid them breaking and bleeding. I also just dipped the tops, and that seemed to work well, too. =)

Hi! I haven’t tried it, but I’ve had people mention that Earthbalance has worked well for them in other recipes. So that might be a good one to try. Hope that helps!
