Golden Oreo Sand Pudding is such a fun summer treat! You make Oreo cookie “sand” and layer it with pudding to create a beach themed dessert that looks just like sand. Serve it out of a bucket for a crowd or individual pudding cups.
My mom first made this sand pudding recipe for my brother’s graduation party (in 2011) and it was a huge hit.
I’ve since made it for a beach themed bridal shower and it also got rave reviews.
What is sand pudding?
Sand pudding is a fun dessert, much like a trifle or parfait, that uses crushed Oreo cookies to look like sand. And let me tell you, it really does look like sand!
You layer the crushed cookies with pudding to make an easy dessert that everyone loves.
Much like chocolate lush or a banana split dessert, but this sandy version is perfect for the summer or beach themed events!
Why you’ll love this sand pudding dessert
Easy Summer Dessert – Whether it’s for a pool party, summer picnic, grad party, or a beach themed birthday party or shower, this fits the bill.
Fun Treat – It really looks like real sand! Kids and adults are impressed and enjoy it.
Easy Dessert Recipe – It’s no-bake and comes together in minutes.
- Food Processor – to crush all of the cookies. Or a ziptop bag & rolling pin will get the job done!
- Hand Mixer – It’s easiest to mix the cream cheese with an electric mixer but the pudding will do fine with just a whisk.
- Sand Buckets & Shovels – These are usually readily available at the dollar store, but if it’s off-season ordering is always an option.
- Clear Plastic Cups – If you go the individual cup route, shown are 9 ounce plastic cups.
- Mixing Bowls – You’ll need a few mixing bowls to prep the layers for the sand pudding.

- Golden Oreos – You’ll need the whole package, but you’ll scrape the centers out. We like Oreos but vanilla wafers will also work.
- Classic Oreos – When you mix in a few classic Oreos, it makes the sand look really realistic!
- Cream Cheese – I use full fat cream cheese though reduced fat will likely work fine. Make sure it is softened to room temperature before you start so it will blend nicely.
- Butter – Unsalted butter, also softened to room temperature.
- Powdered Sugar – Sometimes called icing sugar or confectioners’ sugar – all the same.
- Pudding – You’ll need two 3.9 oz packages of instant pudding mix. I use vanilla. Banana will work, too.
- Milk – I use 2% because that’s what I usually have on hand.
- Whipped Topping – You could make your own homemade Cool Whip or pick some up from the freezer section of your market. If you go that route, make sure it is thawed.

Making Golden Oreo Sand Pudding is really easy since it’s a no-bake treat, but it does require a little bit of time to assemble.
- STEP ONE: First, scrape all of the fillings out of the Oreos. This step is optional, to some, but I find this dessert to have enough sugar, so I scrape out the centers.
- STEP TWO: Next, crush the Oreos in a food processor (use the entire package of Golden Oreos with a couple black/classic Oreos to make the sand realistic looking) until you have a sand-like texture.
- STEP THREE: Then, in a large bowl, cream together the cream cheese, butter, and powdered sugar.
- STEP FOUR: In another large bowl, whisk together the pudding mixes and milk. Then add it to the cream cheese mixture. Finally, gently fold in the Cool Whip.
- STEP FIVE: Now you’re ready to assemble your dessert. I like to serve it out of a bucket (the dollar store usually has cute ones!) to keep with the theme, or you can do individual cups. Start with a layer of sand, then alternate sand/pudding until your bucket is full, making sure to end with sand.
That’s it! You’re ready to serve and enjoy.
If you don’t want individual dessert cups, try this banana pudding for a crowd.
Optional Toppings
- Drink umbrella
- Teddy Grahams – to sit under the shade of the mini umbrellas!
- Star gummies or even gummy worms
- Swedish fish
To serve these to a crowd, layer into a 7.5″ sand bucket.
To make individual cups, use 9″ cups and layer the pudding with the Oreo crumbs, starting with crumbs, and making the pudding layer a bit thicker (approximately 1/4 cup). It should make about 6 individual cups.
Golden Oreos or Lemon Oreos will work. Oreo often has limited edition flavors that may work as well.
I use vanilla instant pudding but banana cream, cheesecake, or lemon would work.
How to store it
Sand pudding should be kept covered in the fridge until you’re ready to serve it.
If making it ahead of time, prep the layers & wait to assemble until closer to the time you’ll be ready to serve.
How long will sand pudding last in the fridge?
About 5 days, when assembled.
Can I freeze pudding?
I don’t recommend it. The taste and texture will change as it thaws so you’ll get the best results enjoying it while it’s fresh.
FAQs
Do I have to scrape out the cream filling?
No, you don’t have to, but that’s the way I prefer it. It takes longer, but I don’t find the extra sugar necessary (at all).
What if I got cook and serve pudding instead of instant?
If you picked up cook and serve pudding, make it according to the package instructions, let it cool, and then proceed with the recipe.
How many individual cups does this make?
If you use 9 ounce plastic cups, this recipe will make about 6 individual cups.
