If allowed, could someone kindly export and share midi files for these? Do not own Cubase.

@JBacal , probably your best recreation up to now! Congratulation!

As for Cubase, I have the AI version, a customized LE version for owners of Yamaha or Steinberg hardware. It should allow exporting MIDI files, if I remember correctly.

Today I'm excited to post Alan Silvestri's "End Credits" cue from the movie "Contact." I used the new Synchron Duality Strings Sordino exclusively (no other string libraries). I mostly relied on the standard "classic" room-mix preset. But I did create an additional violins instance using the 2 close mics (A-solo and A-ribbon) and the B-bright mics for added detail, expression and randomness of note start times. I hope you enjoy it.

VSL Libraries used:
Synchron Woodwinds
SYNCHRON-ized Woodwinds
Smart Orchestra (solo flute)
Synchron Brass
SYNCHRON-ized Dimension Brass (for trumpet glissando)
Synchron Percussion
Synchron Harp
SYNCHRON-ized Harp
Synchron Yamaha CFX piano
Synchron Duality Strings Sordino

I know how much work these demos need, but I've never really got warm with them, maybe only with the "Hook" mockup. But the "Contact" one is really, really good, and one of my favourite not-John-Williams-soundtracks. Well done, Jay!

Thanks everyone for listening and posting some appreciated positive feedback. Maybe I'm starting to get the hang of this! Ennio Morricone - Cinema Paradiso - Cubase Project Available - VSL Movie Masterpieces (7) But more likely, the credit for an improved result this time should go to the new Duality Strings Sordino and of course the great composer - Alan Silvestri!!

Here is my performance of Alexandre Desplat’s “Harry's Closet and Polyjuice” cue from the movie “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.” This is a nice example of underscoring (as opposed to a Main Title theme). The music is perhaps a little more sparsely orchestrated than a typical John Williams piece, but the orchestration is nevertheless wonderfully colorful, melodious, mysterious and magical. I hope you enjoy listening.

Today we have my version of Danny Elfman's "Ice Dance" cue from "Edward Scissorhands" featuring VSL's new Vienna Boys Choir library. This is not just a children's choir from Vienna but rather THE Vienna Boys Choir - iconic and angelic!

The choice of this piece is ideal for the Vienna Boys Choir. It's among my favorite film scores of all time, and as always, you've done an outstanding job, needless to say.

Sounds wonderful. The moment I saw the boys choir I wondered how it would sound doing Edward Scissorhands - what other libraries are used here?

Here is a complete list of VSL libraries that were used for this demo. There is actually a surprising amount of orchestration happening just below the surface in this piece. Elfman frequently layers tremolo strings with regular strings or ponticello with regular. This subtlety can barely be heard, but I think it adds to the shimmering, icy quality of the piece.

Vienna Boys Choir
Synchron Woodwinds
Synchron Brass
VI Series Special Brass (cornet)
Synchron-ized Dimension Brass II (muted trombones)
Synchron Percussion
Synchron-ized Percussion (second celesta)
Synchron Harp
Synchron-ized Harp
Synchron-ized Solo Strings (solo violin)
Synchron Duality Strings - both Regular and Con Sordino
Synchron String Pro (for ponticello)
Synchron Strings Elite (for divisi)

Thanks! Did you use the Synchron-ized Harp as a second harp? Or did you more use it for articulations that it perhaps has but the Synchron Harp is missing? Just curious.

As a second harp. I could have easily used the Synchron Harp twice as no "fancy" techniques were required.

Here is my performance of Alan Silvestri's "Main Title" cue from the film "Forrest Gump" (1994). Silvestri was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score for his work on this film.

I used a combination of Synchron Duality Strings Colors (Flautando) and a small amount of Synchron Duality Strings Regular for the first part of the piece (0:01-1:27). For the middle section I used a combination of Synchron Duality Strings Con Sordino and Synchron Duality Strings Regular (1:27- 2:01). For the final section I again used a combination of Synchron Duality Strings Colors (Flautando) and Synchron Duality Strings Regular (2:01-end).

The flautando strings add a lovely soft flute-like timbre to the quieter passages.

Here is my performance of Harry Gregson-Williams’s “Fairytale” cue from the animated film “Shrek” (2001).

View attachment HGWilliams_Shrek_Fairytale.mp3

The glockenspiel, wind chimes and harp immediately create a fantasy sound. And the simple folktune style of the melody also helps reinforce that "once upon a time" fairytale vibe.

The piece features the flute 1 and oboe 2 from the Synchron Woodwinds library and uses “mostly” the new lyrical legato articulation. This new patch has smooth legato transitions and an expressive vibrato especially on the longer notes.

I could not find an official score for this cue. Instead, I relied on a number of transcriptions on musescore.com as well as my own ear to fill in any gaps. I find it quite challenging to tease apart the instrumental parts that are merely doubling other instruments to add a little extra color. But transcribing can be an enjoying exercise and forces me to really listen deep into the orchestration.

I used the following VSL libraries:

  • Synchron Woodwinds
  • Synchron Brass
  • SYNCHRON-ized Soprano Choir
  • SYNCHRON-ized Vienna Choir
  • Synchron Basso Profundo Choir
  • Synchron Percussion
  • Synchron Harp
  • Synchron Yamaha CFX
  • Synchron Duality Strings
  • SYNCHRON-ized Solo Strings (violin 1)

Please feel free to make any commnets or ask any questions.

Best wishes,
Jay

Here is my performance of Hans Zimmer’s “Jack Sparrow” cue from the blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean.” As I worked on this piece I began to think of it as a pirate-flavored cinematic cello concerto. Ennio Morricone - Cinema Paradiso - Cubase Project Available - VSL Movie Masterpieces (18) The solo cello in the opening perfectly depicts the drunken swagger of Johnny Depp’s pirate captain character.

This mock-up turned out to be one of my wife's favorites. She described the experience of listening to it as a "fun rollercoaster ride." My only reply was "I guess Hans Zimmer kinda knows what he's doing!" Ennio Morricone - Cinema Paradiso - Cubase Project Available - VSL Movie Masterpieces (19)

For the solo cello I used the cello 1 from the Solo Strings plus MIR Pro for placement. The Solo Strings may be one of the older VSL libraries but it remains one of their absolute best! I use it on almost every piece I do.

The percussion was indeed a challenge here, but I did my best to capture the spirit. Processing drums in not one of my strengths, so I approached the sound more from an orchestrator's perspective than an audio engineer. To give certain hits more power I layered different drums together-- for example adding taiko for low end boom and snare for snap.

I used the following VSL libraries:

Synchron Woodwinds
Synchron Brass
Synchron Percussion
Synchron Duality Strings - Regular
Synchron Elite Strings
VI Series Jazz Drums
SYNCHRON-ized Vienna Choir
Synchron Basso Profundo Choir
SYNCHRON-ized Solo Strings

As always please feel free to post a comment or ask a question.

What a way to showcase the existing solo cello to boost their corresponding libraries' sales before the new one will eventually come out.
Chapeau.

I enjoyed this very much. Thanks for sharing!

Today I offer up my performance of James Horner’s “Alfred Moves to Helena” cue from the film “Legends of the Fall.” (1979) Horner is IMHO one of the masters at writing sweeping folk-flavored melodies that stir the emotions. I find this piece very touching and tender.

View attachment James Horner - Legends of the Fall - Alred Moves to Helena.mp3

I used the new Synchron Woodwinds “Lyrical Legato” patches extensively in this piece. And you can really hear the new clarinet 1 clearly in the middle section. The new lyrical legato patches have a smoother legato connection between notes. And the flute and oboe have a lovely expressive legato, perfect for slower melodies.

Interestingly, Horner also introduced a Shakuachi (starting at 1:22) which is a surprising choice, but it adds brilliantly to the traditional folk tune vibe.

The primary VSL libraries are the Synchron Woodwinds & Synchron World Winds. I also used the Synchron Duality Strings Sordino for all the ensemble string parts.

Please feel free to make any comments or ask any questions.

Best wishes, Jay

All of these tracks are excellent work. Did you get the original scores or did you write them only by ear?
