Chocolate Themed Party - Life is a Party (1)

Over the weekend we had aChocolate Themed Partyto celebrate my daughter Maddie’s sixth birthday, and I’m so excited to share all the fun details with you. Maddie loves chocolate, so when we started talking themes months ago, chocolate came out the clear winner. This is a really fun idea for birthday parties for any chocolate lover, but could also be great as a theme for a girls night, a bridal shower, valentine’s day party, or baby showers. We’re excited to share all our chocolate party ideas with you.

Chocolate Themed Party Decorations

It’s fun to add a little chocolate themed party decor for your special day. Here’s some of the fun ideas we can up with to go with our chocolate theme.

  • brown steamers
  • brown polka dot balloons
  • chocolate scented candles
  • “chocolate” flowers
  • brown paper lanterns and pom poms
  • chocolate soap

The theme set the stage for a simple colour scheme for the party of brown and white.

Streamers

I ordered some brown streamers on-line and to dress them up a little, I ruffled them on the sewing machine with some white. They turned out so cute, I love them.I think I’ll be ruffling lots of streamers in the future. 😉 To decorate the fireplace and the stairs I layered up the streamers with some pom pom yarn and brown ribbon. I love the layered, feminine look.

Balloons

I also ordered a bunch of brown polka dot balloons. on-line.

Hershey Kiss

We happened to have a cute little Hershey kiss guy that looked pretty cute on the couch.

Chocolate Flowers

I wanted to do some flowers for the party. I picked some puss* willows, and bought some white tulips, but I also wanted to incorporate some chocolate. So, I decided to make some “chocolate flowers”. I used some snack size chocolate bars and smarties and some washi tape.

I just cut a piece of wire for the stem, and used the tape to connect it to the chocolate bar, and wrap the wire.

They were pretty easy to make, and kind of a fun detail.

Chocolate Candles

Another fun detail, were the chocolate scented candles I found and put in simple glass vases on the table. The room smelt so, so chocolatey!

I filled another vase with just puss* willows and chocolate flowers, and used them as part of the centerpiece on the dessert table.

Paper Lanterns and Pom Poms

Above the dessert table was one of my favourite things, a bouquet of paper lanterns and pom poms hanging down. So pretty, and a great way to add a little feminine charm to a brown and white colour scheme.

Chocolate Soap

Another fun little detail, I picked up some chocolate soap from the body shop for the powder room.

Chocolate Themed Party Games and Activities

Chocolate Themed Party - Life is a Party (13)

I thought about a few different chocolate fun games and activities for the party, and settled on a Make Your Own Chocolate Bar idea.

Make Your Own Chocolate Bar Materials:

  • chocolate bar molds
  • milk chocolateraisins
  • dried blueberries
  • craisins
  • coconut
  • white chocolate chips
  • butterscotch chips
  • vanilla mini marshmallows
  • chocolate mini marshmallows
  • chocolate sprinkles
  • rainbow sprinkles
  • mini gummi bears
  • mini M and M’s
  • toffee bits
  • peanuts
  • walnuts
  • caramel corn
  • jelly beans
  • tin foil wrappers
  • paper labels
  • markers

I found some chocolate bar molds at a local candy making supplier. Then I melted down some milk chocolate Easter bunnies I found on sale after Easter. I set up the dining room with lots of different add-ins in the cutest little polka dot paper cups.

We had a variety of nuts, dried fruits, and candies. Guess which was most popular?

Here’s what we used: raisins, dried blueberries, craisins, coconut, white chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, vanilla mini marshmallows, chocolate mini marshmallows, chocolate sprinkles, rainbow sprinkles, mini gummi bears, mini M and M’s, toffee bits, peanuts, walnuts, caramel corn, and jelly beans. I just went to the bulk food store and bought a tiny little amount of each.

We invited the guests to fill their mold with melted chocolate and then add in toppings to create a new chocolate bar. The kids had a great time deciding what kind of chocolate bar to make, and adding lots of different ingredients to their chocolate. This was the perfect way to create a bit of a Willy Wonka experience for the kids.

After they were done, we popped them into the fridge to set. Before the party I cut paper to fit the size of the chocolate bars, and the party guests had a great time coming up with a name for their new chocolate bars, and decorating the labels.

Once the chocolate was all set up we popped the bars of chocolate out of the molds, wrapped them in foil, added the labels and put them into their loot bags, as a take home party favor.

I loved how they turned out, and the kids thought it was super cool that they could invent their own new kind of chocolate bar. This was my favorite activity at the party, and a huge hit with everyone.

  • The chocolate bars they created
  • mini chocolate bars
  • chocolate scented play dough

Along with their newly invented chocolate bars we also included some mini chocolate bars and chocolate scented play dough for a fun chocolate themed take home party favors for our guests.

Chocolate Piñata

Along with playing and eating, the birthday girl also requested we have a piñata. Chocolate themed piñata’s are a little hard to come by, so what’s a girl to do? Make your own. I used theOh Happy Day tutorialto make an “M” for Maddie.

Then, I used tissue paper, to make the fringe decorations. We filled it up with mini chocolate candy. We made ours into a pull string one, instead of a smash one -I’m not too keen on children welding a baseball bat in my living room. 😉

It was lots of fun and the treats got added to their loot bags. Here’s my girls posing before the party started.

Chocolate Dessert TableChocolate Themed Party - Life is a Party (22)

One of the highlights of the Chocolate Party was the amazing Chocolate Dessert Table. In fact this is what might have sealed the theme for Maddie my little chocolate connoisseur. We wanted to create a little world of chocolate for everyone to enjoy.

I’m actually not the biggest chocolate food fan myself, but I pulled out all my favourite chocolate recipes and sweet treats for this one. Here’s what we had

  • brownies
  • chocolate coconut cookies
  • toffee and chocolate chip cookies
  • triple chocolate mousse cake
  • chocolate pudding
  • donuts
  • chocolate fondue
  • turtles
  • chocolate covered almonds.

I only ended up making a few of the treats myself, so here’s all my secrets to an impressive, but not too tricky chocolate dessert table.

Some Homemade Chocolate Treats

I baked the toffee and chocolate chip cookies from one of our favourite family recipes. Also I made the chocolate coconut cookies, see the recipe here . Both recipes are pretty quick and easy, make a fairly large batch, and are tried and true.

I made the yummy chocolate pudding from a box, and served it in mini mason jars, with sweet little silver teaspoons.

The brownies are also from a mix (shhh). I made them even sweeter with little brown flags made from cute toothpicks and a little washi tape for flags. So simple and so cute for a special occasion.

Store Bought Chocolate Treats

We picked up the donuts the morning of the party. I asked Maddie what kind of chocolate donuts she wanted, and listed them all off. She said, “why not all them Mom?” Why not? So we got a few of each. I made little pom poms from some of the fringed streamers and tied them with a little brown baker’s twine on to a white toothpick. Love the little details, and they were supper easy.

Maddie asked specifically for a birthday cake, since we usually have cupcakes. I didn’t have an amazing chocolate cake recipe, so I decided to order a little one from our favourite local bakery. Great decision. It was delicious, and made the baking load for this party really manageable.

We also had a few of our favourite chocolates on the dessert table -turtles, and chocolate covered almonds.

I used a lot of glass dessert plates and serving pieces and wanted to add in a little more rustic and vintage feel, so I used a few little wooden boxes, a scramble tile “Madeline”, my chocolate flowers and puss* willows, an antique scale and some of thebirthday party invitation chocolate bars -more on those and the free printable chocolate bar party invitations here.

Love how these little touches, made it all feel a little more relaxed and fun. You can also find the free printable food labels here.

Chocolate Fondue

I did want to have a bit of fruit available, so I did a chocolate fondue and fruit tray. We served the fondue in the kitchen, not on the dessert table, to make it a little easier for everyone,. I also used some plastic lined little paper cups, sometimes used for candy, so the kids could have there own little container of fondue. (Ever shared a fondue with little ones, here’s a great solution for the double dippers.). This is a great alternative to a chocolate fountain. It’s much easier to manage, with less mess, and no danger of double dipping.

During dessert my husband made everyone chocolate milk shakes, which we served with striped paper straws. We also had mini water bottles (love this size for kid’s parties).

The chocolate party was a great theme, and made for a truly “sweet” party!
