The Best New Artist nominees at the 2024 Grammys have a lot to be proud of ahead of the awards show.

In November 2023, the recording academy announced that Ice Spice, Jelly Roll, Gracie Abrams, Fred Again.., Noah Kahan, Victoria Monét, Coco Jones and The War and Treaty were up for the prestigious award. Previous recipients include notable names like Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Megan thee Stallion and more.

While many of the 2024 nominees have been in the industry for quite some time, the award recognizes the artists who have had distinctive voices, visions and sounds in their breakout year.

After learning the news of his nominations, Jelly Roll took to social media to share his emotional reaction.

“The greatest honor an artist can ever hear is that they’ve been nominated for a Grammy, and I got to hear that this morning,” he said in a touching Instagram video about his noms for Best New Artist and Best Country Duo/Group Performance. “I haven’t cried like this since my daddy died. I tried making this video seven times y’all. I love y’all man so f—king much.”

Gracie Abrams

The singer is the daughter of director J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath. She released her debut single “Mean It” in October 2019. The following year, Gracie dropped her first EP Minor and more new music including the track “Unlearn” with Benny Blanco. In 2022, she opened up for Rodrigo. She’s best known for her songs “I Miss You I’m Sorry,” “Mess It Up” “I Know It Won’t Work” and more.

Gracie had a breakout in 2023 as she dropped her first full-length album, Good Riddance, and opened up for Taylor Swift on her Eras Tour. She also collaborated with fellow nominee Kahan for their song “Everywhere, Everything" which marked her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100.

Fred Again..

Fred Again.., whose real name is Frederick John Philip Gibson, was a record producer and songwriter before breaking out on his own. He cowrote George Ezra’s “Shotgun” and Clean Bandit and Demi Lovato's “Solo.” Fred Again.. also teamed up with Ed Sheeran to produce his 2019 album, No.6 Collaborations Project. That same year, Fred Again.. began his first solo project, Actual Life, where he collected snippets of voice memos, social media clips and other songs to incorporate them into his original tracks.

Following the success of Actual Life, he released two follow-up albums with the same name. In January 2023, he and Skrillex released their collaboration "Rumble" which featured Flowdan. Fred Again.. is best known for his songs “Turn On The Lights Again,” “Adore U,” “Ten” and more.

Ice Spice

Ice Spice had hit after hit in 2023. The rapper started the year by dropping her debut album, Like..?, which featured some of her early songs including “Princess Diana,” “Gangsta Boo” featuring Lil Tjay, “Bikini Bottom” and more. In February 2023, she released “Boys A Liar Pt. 2” with Pink Pantheress which ended up going viral on TikTok.

After dropping the song, Ice Spice’s year didn’t slow down. She released a remix of “Princess Diana” with Nicki Minaj and was featured on the remix of Swift’s “Karma.” Later that year, Minaj and Ice Spice reunited to perform "Barbie World" for the Barbie movie soundtrack.

Jelly Roll

Before dominating country music, Jelly Roll was a rapper and dropped his first mixtape, The Plain Shmear Tape, in 2003. He would continue to release hip-hop music and collaborate with other rappers including Lil Wyte, Struggle Jennings, Haystak and Tech N9ne. In 2015, Jelly Roll's song "Smoking Section" went gold. Five years later, he got his first platinum hit with “Save Me.”

In 2021, Jelly Roll made the switch to country music and blended his love of hip-hop with his new work. That same year, he made his debut at the Grand Ole Opry. As a country artist, Jelly Roll dropped more songs including “Son of a Sinner,” “Need a Favor,” “Dead Man Walking” and more.

2023 was a breakthrough year for Jelly Roll. He scored his first number one with “Son of a Sinner” and made history spending 25 weeks at number 1 on Billboard's Emerging Artists chart. He won New Artist of the Year at the 2023 CMAs and took home three awards at the CMTs.

Coco Jones

Jones got her start as an actress on Disney Channel with a role in Good Luck Charlie and in the original movie Let It Shine. She currently stars in Peaco*ck’s Bel-Air. While acting, Jones also pursued a music career and came in third place for Radio Disney’s Next Big Thing in 2010 and joined Hollywood Records shortly after.

After Jones was dropped from Hollywood Records in 2014, she began to release music independently including the track “Peppermint.” In 2022, she signed to Def Jams and dropped her debut EP, What I Didn't Tell You, which featured “Caliber,” “ICU” and more.

Noah Kahan

The singer-songwriter got his big break in 2017 when he signed with Republic Records and opened for Milky Chance. Two years later, Kahan released his debut album Busyhead which featured the duet “Hurt Somebody” with Julia Michaels.

In October 2020, he began posting clips on TikTok of a song that would eventually become his hit single “Stick Season” which he dropped two years later. In October 2022, Kahan released an album named after his breakout hit. The following year, he released a deluxe version of the album titled Stick Season (We'll All Be Here Forever), which included collaborations with Abrams, Post Malone, Lizzy McAlpine, Kacey Musgraves, Hozier and more.

Victoria Monet

Monét began pursuing music in 2010 and joined the girl group Purple Reign. While the band signed with Motown Records, they were dropped by the label before releasing any music. After Purple Reign split, Monét focused primarily on songwriting. Atlantic Records CEO Craig Kallman heard one of her demos and offered Monét a record deal. She dropped her debut EP Nightmares & Lullabies: Act 1 in October 2014.

After releasing her album, Monét opened for Fifth Harmony and Ariana Grande, whom she collaborated with on the songs “Better Days” and “Monopoly.” In addition to singing with Grande, Monét also helped write several of the pop star’s songs including “Be Alright,” “Let Me Love You,” “7 Rings” and “Thank U Next.”

In 2023, Monét dropped “On My Mama" which is up for Record of the Year and Best R&B Song.

The War and Treaty

The country music duo features husband and wife Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter. They dropped their debut album, Healing Tide, in 2018. Two years later, the pair released their breakout single “Five More Minutes.”

In 2022, The War and Treaty signed with Universal Music Group Nashville and released the album Lover's Game the following year. They teamed up with Zach Bryan on the song "Hey Driver" which made it to the Top 20 on the Billboard 100. The War and Treaty made history in 2023 as they became the first black duo nominated for Duo of the Year at both the CMAs and ACM Awards.
