Why This Recipe Works
One of the easiest Asian dishes to make is hands down this one: Garlic Noodles. If you are tired of rice, or just want something new, this flavorful stir-fried noodle dish is just what you need! The ingredients hint at Western-Asian fusion which combines pasta, soy sauce, and Parmesan cheese. The star of the dish, garlic, is a staple in both cuisines. This dish is flavorful and rich thanks to the fresh garlic sauteed in oil and butter until it's crispy and sweet. The addition of soy sauce and sesame oil adds depth and richness and true Asian flavors. The meal takes as long to make as the noodles cook!
Ingredients:
- noodles: you can use any long noodles you have on hand (spaghetti, Angel hair, lo mein, ramen, etc)
- garlic: the base of the flavor in this dish, use fresh garlic cloves, not pre-minced garlic
- olive oil and butter: together it's the best combo for sauteing veggies
- soy sauce and sesame oil: both will give the dish the Asian character
- Parmesan cheese: perfect finishing touch.
How to make Garlic Noodles?
- Place noodles in boiling water and cook until al dente.
- Start by heating up olive oil and melting butter in a large skillet.
- Stir often and watch the garlic. It should be golden. If sauteed too long, it will turn bitter.
- Add soy sauce and sesame oil to sauteed garlic and stir. The mixture should be very fragrant.
- Add cooked, drained noodles to the pan and toss with garlic mixture.
- Sprinkle Parmesan cheese over noodles and serve.
Storing and reheating leftovers
Any leftovers from this dish should be stored in a container with a lid, in the fridge, for up to 4 days.
To reheat, place noodles in a pan, add a splash of water, and cook on medium-low heat until heated through.
Recipe FAQs
How to serve this dish?
Garlic noodles can be served as is or as a side dish to baked teriyaki salmon, shrimp or teriyaki chicken, in place of rice.
Do you need the oyster sauce in this dish?
Oyster sauce is a classic ingredient used in Asian restaurants to make garlic noodles. However, if you are cooking at home and know you won't use it much, you can skip it. I prefer the combination of soy sauce and sesame oil. You can also add a teaspoon of sugar or honey. The recipe below is my preferred version.
What noodles are best for this recipe?
Garlic noodles can be made with lo mein, udon, rice noodles, spaghetti or angel hair. Use what you prefer or what you have on hand. I used spaghetti and it worked great!

Turned out great! I didn’t have oyster sauce so this was perfect!
With the leftovers, I added basil pesto to it and it tasted even better. It softened the extra garlic flavour, both ways are fantastic!
Thank you!Reply
